Legal Issues

Is it legal to burn a CD?

Despite what some would like you to think recently, it is legal to burn CDs. Why else would a computer come with a CD recorder built in? You can make copies of your own audio CDs, mix and match select tracks from your CD collection, or you can download MP3s from services such as Emusic or Magnatunes. Also many song writers usually give out some MP3s for free download . Check out GlenPhillips.com, formerly of Toad the Wet Sprocket!

Legal MP3 encoding and decoding technology

Thomson collects royalties for patents on MP3 technology. In order to legitimately encode and decode MP3s, companies must pay a royalty of about $5 per product! This is a huge chunk for a $20 to $30 product which is why we had to increase the price of MP3 To Wave Converter PLUS from $19.95 to $24.95. Many software programs out on the Internet do not pay this fee and could be subject to legal action from Thomson. Acoustica, Inc is legitimate and pays the MP3 royalties. If you use MP3 software from another company you should check Thomson's approved/licensed company list to make sure it is legally allowed to manipulate MP3s.
