Recording

Mixcraft™ allows you to record audio through your soundcard. To bring up the recording window, click the record button on the toolbar, or select "Record" from the "Mix" menu. (Ctrl+R)

Preparation

One of the biggest problems is to make sure you are actually recording from the right input. If you look at the back of your computer, you’ll see the soundcard. If it’s dark back there, get a flashlight. J You’ll want to make sure that you have either a microphone plugged into the microphone jack, or some other device such as a hardware mixer, record player, etc. plugged into the stereo input jack.

q    Microphone input : Make sure that it is a 1/8" mono mini. (Mono plugs will have one line on the tip and stereo plugs will have 2 lines on the tip.)

q    Line-In input: Make sure that it is a 1/8" stereo mini. If you are recording from a record player, see this. The line input requires an amplified ‘Line Level’ signal and you need to get a hardware mixer.

Make sure to select the correct soundcard and then select the source which will vary depending on your soundcard. However, the input options might include MIDI, CD, Line-In, Microphone, Auxilary, Wave/DirectSound, WhatUHear, etc. Click the "Select" checkbox on the one you’d like to record.

q    Choose Line-In to record from the Line-In (Recording LPs, tapes, your hardware mixer, and other "Line Level" input sources)

q    Choose Microphone if you have a microphone connected to the microphone jack on your soundcard.

q    Choose Wave or Wave/DirectSound to record sound streaming from the Internet.

q    Choose MIDI to record from the MIDI device.

q    If in doubt, choose "WhatUHear". Note that this option may not be available on your soundcard.

q    If you don’t have the option to record ‘Wave’ or ‘WhatUHear’ and you need to record what your computer is generating, you can try hooking up stereo mini from your line out directly to your line in on your sound card. (Note that you will not be able to hear anything during this time.)

You can also adjust the input level of the sound. Make sure to test the sound at the peak capacity (loudest) and make sure that the level meters don’t go into the red if possible. For example, if you are recording an LP, test the levels by playing the loudest part of the sound. Lower the level until it isn’t clipping/distorting in the red.

Auto Stop After / Recording Timer
If you are recording something for a set period of time, click the "Auto Stop After" checkbox. Select or type the number of minutes you’d like to record. When the recording is done, the software will play a chime to notify you that the recording is done.

Overdub
Check this option to play your mix at the same time as recording. This is useful if you want to synchronize new recordings to your existing mix. For example, if you are recording a song and you’ve added a drum track and now you are recording a guitar part, it’s nice to actually hear the drums during the recording. J If its not important to be synched up, you might uncheck this option to avoid getting ‘bleeding’ or feedback where the audio being played through your speakers is captured as input on your new track recording.

Start Recording

Before you record a sound, click the mouse on the position you’d like the new sound to start. If you are overdubbing, this will determine where playback starts, as well.

The above picture shows the ‘caret’, which will also be the position where the newly recorded sound will start.

The recording source should be the soundcard you’d like to record from. If you’re lucky enough to have a soundcard with multiple inputs, choose the correct input.

Click the image\ebx_-1742129010.gif record button to start recording. The peak meters will help you monitor your recording so that it doesn’t distort. Try to stay in the ‘yellow’, which represents a strong signal. If the clip meters turn red, they will stay red for 5 seconds.

When you are done recording, click the
image\ebx_-1650993912.gif stop recording button. Your sound will appear in the mix.

TIP: If you want to have Mixcraft ask you to confirm each recording, go into your Preferences and select the "Recording" tab. Click "Ask to Save Recordings?". The next time you record, it will allow you to preview the recording before saving.

TIP2: What happens to the recordings that aren’t saved with a .MXP project? All recordings that are not saved with a .MXP are deleted when you clear the project by clicking "New" from the "File" menu or when you quit the software.

Punch In/Out Recording Mode

Assuming overdubbing is on, if you start playback and then click record, you will be in a special ‘Punch In/Out’ recording mode. When you hit ‘Stop’, playback will continue. Hit ‘Record’ to start recording from the current playback offset. This process can continue until the end of the mix.
