Congratulations to our Mixcraft Patch Contest Winner!
We received many great entries for our patch contest, but one entry stood out as the unanimous winner. Luis Acuña of Costa Rica put together a virtual electric guitar that just screams Carlos Santana! Mixcraft Patch Contest Winner -Luis Acuna
Q: Luis, tell us about your musical background.

A: I started studying music with my grandfather, a musician and composer who taught me violin, piano and music theory since I was about 7. At 11 I entered my school´s band, and at 13 I entered Costa Rica´s Youth Symphony Orchestra. Around 1978 I got my hands on a Micromoog synthesizer. I worked with it and read about sound synthesis quite a bit. During my college years I wrote a few songs and a couple classical pieces, played keyboards with a handful of pop / rock / prog groups, and continued to study Chopin and other piano classics at home.

After about 15 years doing little musically, last October I discovered Beatcraft and Mixcraft and retook composing and recording. And a couple of months ago I joined an old guys´ rock group (average age 49), where we play classic rock covers. My "studio" is simply my home office, with a simple midi keyboard plugged to my computer. I usually program the percussion with Beatcraft, record the other instruments with Mixcraft through the midi keyboard, and then touch-up the midi clips with the editing facilities in Mixcraft.

Q: How did you come up with your Santana-style guitar patch?

A: I wanted to make a latin-rock version of Silent Night, so I started playing with Mixcraft´s latin rock loops, to make sketches, to get ideas.. I studied Santana for several weeks, rented videos, listened to his music while taking notes. When I realized that there was no sound in Mixcraft even close to Santana´s guitar, I decided to make it myself.

I began with a clean guitar sound, but couldn´d decide between jazz guitar and funk guitar, so after trying each I decided to mix them both. I also went to Santana´s web site to learn about his gear, and settled on the Voxengo amp simulator, a distortion box and a compressor. While polishing up the patch I realized it was more logical to put the distortion first, the compressor second and the amp last, and got a better sound that way.

--- Luis´s guitar patch is now part of Mixcraft 4! Download Build 96, and you´ll find the patch under Distorted Guitar, called Black Magic Guitar. Thanks Luis, and enjoy your new M-Audio Oxygen 61!
