There are three recording modes.  Each track's recording mode can be set by right clicking or by using the "Track" menu.

Track menu > Recording Mode > Takes

Overdub

Replace

You can set up your default recording modes in the Preferences.

hmtoggle_arrow1 Takes

In this mode, all previous clips are muted and a new recording is made on a new lane.   Audio tracks default to "Takes" mode.

Recording takes

Each new recording or 'take' is placed on a new lane.  This causes the audio track to grow in size vertically for each recording.  Please note that it will mute any audio that intersects with the new recording.

In conjunction with punch in/out, it creates a clip on a new lane in the punch area .

Takes and punch in/out area

It only mutes the portion of the audio clips in the punch area in this case.

hmtoggle_arrow1 Overdub

In this mode, all previous clips are heard during recording.  Virtual Instrument (MIDI) tracks default to Overdub mode.

Loop recording mode

Each new recording is placed on a new lane.

hmtoggle_arrow1 Replace

In this mode, the existing audio is replaced.  New lanes are not created.
